The Melamine Shift

The production of melamine plates is an intensive process that contributes significantly to environmental pollution. Discarded melamine plates often end up as hazardous waste in our overcrowding landfill, particularly because of how complex and expensive the recycling process can be. Ironically, many food stalls in Singapore are turning to reusable melamine plates to replace plastic wares. The project explores an alternative to using melamine wares by using fruit fibres.  The team created FRUVAS; an eco-friendly plate using fruit fibres which not only repurposes agricultural waste, but also provides a biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternative to melamine plates. In doing so, it offers food stall owners and consumers a sustainable choice in minimizing their ecological footprints while aligning with Singapore's broader initiative to promote a circular economy.
